Muslim comics

Muslims and cartoons don't seem to go together very easily, but Naif al-Mutawa, a New York educated Kuwaiti plans to change all that.

He thinks that there should be a Muslim alternative to Superman and Spiderman, and is about to launch a comic with a storyline drawn from history, and featuring a global quest for 99 gems, which correspond to the 99 names of God. The superhero characters will be based on qualities associated with the 99 names.

Will such a comic be acceptable in the Middle East?

Earlier I talked to Dr al-Mutawa and to Shaykh Michael Mumisa, who works with Muslim youth in the UK. I asked Naif al-Mutawa where he got the idea for these superheroes from.
