In Saudi Arabia a gawky teenager is transformed into a hulking creature. In South Africa a boy discovers a sparkling rock with healing powers. These individuals are superheroes in a new comic book series, “The 99,” intended for young Muslims, Reuters reported. Inaugurated in July and trumpeted as the first superhero project derived from Islamic culture, the series was created by the Kuwaiti-born Naif al-Mutawa, 35, who studied at Tufts University and earned a doctorate in clinical psychology and an M.B.A. from Columbia University.

Last week he won the blessing of Muslim clerics who manage an investment bank in Bahrain that approved $25 million to help finance his company, the Teshkeel Media Group, and pay for the start of an animated “99” series for television. The number refers to the 99 attributes of God in Islam. “The idea of using religion as a modern-day archetype is not new; the West has been using it for a long time,” Mr. al-Mutawa said. “No one has really mined Islamic culture for that.” His company is also marketing Arabic-language versions of classic American comic books, including “Archie” and “Spider-Man,” to the Middle East.
