THE 99 on Tim's Reviews

August 13, 2007

Recently Virgin Comics released several comic series created by eastern Indian creators and based on myths and lore of Hindu culture. Now Teshkeel Comics has come along with THE 99, a superhero comic based on Islamic culture and religion. The story is based on actual mythology about 99 mystical gems called the Noor Stones, which grant fantastic powers to the wielders of the gems.

The first third or so of the 48 page special is set in 13th century Baghdad and relates the history of the stones and their creation. Cutting ahead to present day, an explosion has caused one of the gems to shatter, the fragments imbedding themselves into a teenage boy named Jabbar. This turns him into a giant powerhouse. Jabbar’s look and powers are a bit too close to a certain Green-skinned behemoth from Marvel but that’s ok. Dr. Ramzi has been researching the stones for years and helps Jabbar by having most of the fragments removed, stopping his growth and allowing him to control his great strength. THE 99 was a free giveaway comic and at 48 pages, that’s not a bad deal at all. I’m not sure how much distribution the book got but it’s well worth checking out. The story and art are solid although not spectacular. I’m interested in seeing how the book develops from here. Comics are truly becoming global! Grade B
