As an 18-year old university student, Atash Hourmaan spent his summer holiday doing charity work. He was helping with the reconstruction of the historic Iranian city of Bam, which was devastated by an earthquake in 2003. During the school year, Atash studies sustainable environments at university so he can become an aid and development worker like his aunt, Buran Shirazi, executive director of THE 99 Steps Foundation.

Amid the rubble of Bam, Atash found a curious gemstone. When he first picked it up, he felt strong and inspired. But then his hand became hot, and flames shot from his hands onto the half-constructed houses nearby. He panicked and fled.

THE 99 were called to investigate a series of unexplained fires at the Bam site, just as Buran learned that her nephew was missing. They tracked down Atash, putting out fires along the way, and assured him that they could help him learn to control his powerful talent.

As he learns to control his power, Atash will also use his abilities to enhance his studies of sustainable projects worldwide. He is specifically interested in rural environments across the developing world.

Jaleel’s gemstone was, in fact, not one of the Noor Stones that was carried across the world by the librarians of Baghdad. His gem is a legendary stone that was lost during the original siege, and was carried by a lotus flower into the Gulf, across to ancient Persia. A poor man saw it, gathered it up, and became the world’s first known gem-bearer.
